Free tutorial on making mixed media art & travel journals

I seem to be on a roll the last couple of weeks making several mixed media art journals.  I just love journals.  I keep one in my purse to write down creative ideas that come to me while shopping or walking.  I also keep one for each year ( though I should say I keep a couple for each year as I fill them up) .  Here is the one for 2017 2017-my-journal-1  It is getting filled with my thoughts and experiments quickly.  But that is good because then I get to make another one.

I make and sell mini art and travel journals in my Etsy shop .  I do not charge much for them because I just want them to go to someone who will enjoy my art.  Here are some that I have listed right now; bird-mini-journal-3fairy-mini-journal-netjournal-medieval-artist-1  Then I make a large mixed media art journal that is very complicated and takes about 3 weeks to complete.  Here is my currant one called Steampunk Woman;  steampunk-woman-journal This started out as an old 1930s book that I rescued the covers ( the inside pages are being used for other projects),  I cut out the pages and painted the covers white.  Then I used clear gel and stencils to make the textured background.  I painted it with metallic teal paint and edged with gold paint.  I used Graphic 45 Steampunk Debutante paper for the cover and the inside pages. I painted the woman on the cover with crackle paint and added the metal gears and a name plate.steampunk-woman-journal-1  steampunk-woman-journal-2

There are 3 large book rings with fiber hangings.  There is a key and a cherish token hanging from the front.  There are 33 double sided pages inside.  Most have been made into envelops and tags to attach photos or write journal insights.  Here are some photos of it;

Well I hope you have enjoyed this post.  Drop by my Etsy store to see more. http://www.etsy.com/shop/LDphotography     Stay creative everyday!

Free tutorial Altered book art journal

moongoddess-cover-redo  Here is the process; I start with an old book that I thin out every 3rd page. Then I glue 3 pages of the book together to make a strong base for the art work. I use white gesso to paint every page and let them dry. Finally comes the fun part. I paint each page with metallic  (lumiere paints)and glitter paints making a book with a rainbow of colors.moon goddess 1.jpgI added a hand made pocket with a tag here.moon-goddess-3

Then I put pieces of my art work, Graphic 45 paper, envelops, tags, stamps, clips and other items on the inside pages of the altered book.moongoddress-1 This is one of my handmade tags.

The cover is made by cutting an oval and placing the photo in the inside cover.  The back  cover is also  texturized  ( with glue and tissue paper) , gesso, stained and painted. The gears, the clock and the key are added with gesso.  I touched up with distress inks and gold foil swirls. There are 8 Swarovski AB crystals. I have added a ribbon closure to keep all your art work safely insidemoongoddess-tie. The Image of the Moon Goddess is one of my original metallic photo composites.

Hope you enjoy the photos and the altered book.   I make about one of these a month and sell them when they are done in my Etsy store; https://www.etsy.com/shop/LDphotography

This book was sold right away.

A #portfolio / journal using #Tim Holtz collection folio as a template

I purchased a #Tim Holtz collection portfolio the other day at Joanne’s.  I thought what can you do with this?  Well quite a lot.  I used it as a template and recycled some pressed board I had at home and made this #steam punk portfolio and journal with lots of my  distress inks and paint supplies.  I think this is a wonderful format that can be made to hold a single event ( a special trip) or season   ( Fall ) in an innovative format.

I added two sets of layered pages ( one on each side) to hold photos or journal insights.  The entire portfolio can be closed with the two velco holders and can expand to fit whatever you want to put inside it.

This item is available in my etsy shop; https://www.etsy.com/listing/217127644/handmade-book-portfolio-vintage?ref=shop_home_active_3steamfolio 5_edited-1portfolio 6steamfolio 1 steamfolio 2 steamfolio

free tutorial on how to make a clay cover mixed media collage for an art journal or smash book DIY art project

This is a free tutorial on how I make air dried clay covers for some of my art or travel journals.  I will post the pictures with the explanations below.  Start with some air dry clay that you can get at Michael’s or Joann’s in the children’s art sections.

ImageMeasure the cover of your journal and roll out the clay on wax paper and cut it just a little smaller than the cover measurements. ImageHere I have cut the clay and added 2 rolls in a swirling pattern and stamped some impressions on the clay.ImageHere are four different clay shapes that I made at this time.  It is easier to make several different shapes and clean up afterwards.  The one I am going to use in this project is the one on the far left.ImageThe painting is down after I have let the clay dry for one day.  I use metallic paints; teal and sapphire blue to make the base of the collage.ImageHere are some of the supplies that I use to make the collage vary in color and textures.  The glass beads paste is spread around and then the micro beads are sprinkled on top so they will dry embedded in the paste. The Golden gold paint is used sparingly to highlight the different levels on the clay.ImageHere I have glued on Tim Holtz’s metal gears, and clock face and hand to the top of the swirls.  I then glued on Swarovski crystals to make the collage sparkle.  Here I am trying it on the top of the journal that I will be covering to see how it fits.ImageThis is the finished journal.  I have covered the journal with matching card stock and glued the clay collage on top.  I have added a ribbon loop and a brad to make the closure.  The cover is done.  Inside the journal I continued the theme of Steampunk purple with designer papers and envelops and tags that I made to hold journal ling and photographs inside for future use.  Here are some photos of the inside of this art journal.ImageImageImagethis journal and other journals that I have made in a similiar manner are available in my etsy shop at  https://www.etsy.com/shop/LDphotography?section_id=6805677&ref=shopsection_leftnav_5

Hope you enjoyed learning about this fun way to use air dried clay for mixed media collages and journal covers.

starting new 2014 art journal smash book

For the last two years I have started to seriously journal and smash at least once a week.  You would not think that is so hard to do but finding the time and inspiration is sometimes difficult.  Here is the cover of the new journal that I just finished   I made a digital photo background on PSE  then I added some tissue paper to make some layers on the bottom.  I added wood cutouts of people to represent my family, gears, stars and the year 2014.  I painted all of them.  The clock is a metal embellishment and then I put Swarovski crystals to make the cover sparkle.  I put the collage on a piece of vintage paper and added a Graphic 45 ruler on the bottom.  The title of the journal is “2014 ; a year for change and travel”.  We shall see what it brings.  I will try to document the pages here in my blog.  Good luck to you and your families this year.ImageImageeImage
