This is my great grandmother who was named Martha Fritz Meier. She came to America from Germany as a child. She married my great grandfather when she was 18 and living in Minn. They came to California and she had 11 children. Unfortunately, my great grandfather died early and my g. grandmother had to support her family. She was a strong woman who lived to 88 years old. The contrast between the two photos ; one when she was about 40 and the last right before she died at 88 are both so beautiful.
I love Finnabair’s work ( here is a link to one of her youtube videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ca9CUbyN5Vk) and so I tried my hand at this grunge style mixed media collage with the subject of my Aunt Marge. She grew up in the depression and was a young woman in WWII. She came from a very poor family and graduated from UC Berkley with a BS. She was a wonderful wife and mother and hostess. My father ( her brother) was famous for calling about 5 hours from her house and announcing that we would be arriving soon. She never looked flustered by this and always welcomed us even at midnight! I loved her and she was my model of how to be a successful woman even when life makes it hard for you. Hope you enjoy this collage. In this corner I put in objects that related to her life; airplane, bike, children, school items.
I have discovered paper clay and molds for my mixed media work. Martha Stewart just came out with some started kits that have everything you need to make paper clay embellishments. I love polymer clay but it is so heavy, has to have a dedicated oven, and the set up and clean up takes me lots of time.
The good things about the paper clay is that the items are really light weight and can be affixed to a substrate like paper. They can be painted, dusted with perfect pearls, have glitter added to it and …. they cure over night in the air.
Needless to say, I got out my clay molds , my paints and my imagination and went to work at my craft desk. Here is a sample of some of the easy embellishments that I made. There are also 2 examples of how I used the flowers, stems and leaves in an art journal that I am making. I will start to experiment with more challenging designs next. I will take photos and post how I am making these in my next blog. Fun, fun, fun
