Mixed media journal ; A place in Time

I love transforming a plain spiral notebook into a beautiful mixed media journal.  Here is  the blank spiral notebook that  I started with.  spiral bound book   This is what the end product looked like.  journal a place in time

I created this by taking the book apart and gluing several pages together to make the pages strong enough for the art and embellishments that I put in the inside.  I was using Graphic 45 paper; Fairie Dust for some of the illustrations.  Most of the painted pages were created by using metallic paints.  I made the envelops, decorated paper clips  and tags.  journal a place in time 3

The covers were made by using several coats of white gesso, then using stencils and modeling paste to make the base of the covers.   When making this journal I also used embellishments that I made out of air dried clay, a wooden hummingbird and dragonfly, lace and a vellum picture frame.  I used Dylusions spray paints to paint everything and then added Swarovski crystals and metal dots.  I included 11 blank pages for writing in the  journal.journal a place in time 2 I made a 3 strand jeweled dangle for the top corner of the cover.journal a place in time 1Then I punched holes and added two book rings to bind the journal together.  I like book rings for journals because you can open them up and add new pages or move the pages around.  I decorated the rings with yarn and fibers.DSCN5961  And that is the completed journal.journal a place in timeIt is on sale in my etsy store; https://www.etsy.com/listing/753986042/handmade-journal-junk-journaltravel?ref=shop_home_active_1

#Graphic45 A Ladies’ Diary art journal

I just love Graphic 45 paper.  It always inspires me to create new and beautiful art journals.  This is one that I just completed using the paper called A Ladies’ Diary.

Ladies diary Graphic 45 journal

I made this journal using large book binding rings so additional pages can be added.  It started as a vintage map atlas book that I took apart so I could use the covers.  After a lot of gesso, texture paste and spray paint I got to add the fun stuff.  So the crystals, feathers, ribbon roses and chain with charm all came next.

It has 41 pages that have been handmade using paper, cards and images from the Ladies Diary paper package and my vintage papers.  I really enjoyed making this journal and hope that someone special gets to use it.  So please enjoy these pictures and you might get some cool ideas for your own journals.  If you have any questions or comments just leave them below.

Free tutorial Altered book art journal

moongoddess-cover-redo  Here is the process; I start with an old book that I thin out every 3rd page. Then I glue 3 pages of the book together to make a strong base for the art work. I use white gesso to paint every page and let them dry. Finally comes the fun part. I paint each page with metallic  (lumiere paints)and glitter paints making a book with a rainbow of colors.moon goddess 1.jpgI added a hand made pocket with a tag here.moon-goddess-3

Then I put pieces of my art work, Graphic 45 paper, envelops, tags, stamps, clips and other items on the inside pages of the altered book.moongoddress-1 This is one of my handmade tags.

The cover is made by cutting an oval and placing the photo in the inside cover.  The back  cover is also  texturized  ( with glue and tissue paper) , gesso, stained and painted. The gears, the clock and the key are added with gesso.  I touched up with distress inks and gold foil swirls. There are 8 Swarovski AB crystals. I have added a ribbon closure to keep all your art work safely insidemoongoddess-tie. The Image of the Moon Goddess is one of my original metallic photo composites.

Hope you enjoy the photos and the altered book.   I make about one of these a month and sell them when they are done in my Etsy store; https://www.etsy.com/shop/LDphotography

This book was sold right away.

Flip journal tutorial and Going to Mexico and Europe for a year!

The big news , we are retiring and going to Mexico ( for 2 months ) to plan the year vagabonding trip to Europe for a year.  Why just retire?  We are taking a senior gap year.  The year of exploration between working and retirement! We are traveling with only one bag each and a backpack so only minimal art supplies and my art journal.   So my posts here will be more about photography and whatever art presents itself as we travel.  Oh my I am soooo excited.

So here is my last project before starting to pack ( will miss my studio ).  This is a flip up journal with tags.  I saw one somewhere and I thought it would be a good last project. It turned out to be pretty easy to do and I think it looks good.  I cut out the cover and tag pages from heavy card stock and then made plain card stock pages and Graphic 45 paper pages. The cover is made from Spellbinders die cuts and they are painted with metallic paints.  There are lots of pockets and tags made from scrap papers.  The book rings open to rearrange or add pages to the journal.  And I hung a black key on the cover with Swarvorki crystals ( they are my signature item that I use on all of my art work).  Enjoy!  Oh If you want to follow along on our adventures and how we are doing it ; my blog is seniorgapyear.wordpress.com ( follow) because there will only be posts occasionally before Europe and that is in April. tree dream 7tree dream 2 tree dream 3 tree dream 5tree dreamtree dream 6

Hello 2014 , I want to share with you my evolution to creative and juicy living

I wanted to look at all the changes that have happened to me since 2008 when I opened my Etsy shop;  ldphotography.  This is a travel log of my Artistic evolution.

I started out listing my photographs in my Etsy shop.  I had been taking photographs as a serious hobby  for about 30 years and had
Very quickly I got to know some of the other creative people on Etsy and began to realize that I did not have forever to explore my creative side ( I am approaching retirement which made me think about what amount of time I have left) .  So I started to evolve and discover my artistic world.

What could I do with my photographs to make them useful for everyday enjoyment not to just hang on a wall?   I started to expand my product line.  I made photo magnetic bookmarks, photo ACEOS, photo pendants on rummy-O game tiles, ceramic photo coasters and photo greeting cards.

Then I discovered mixed media collage and started making collage ACEOS ( art cards), and that led to learning how to make mixed media art and travel journals. I discovered on youtube how to alter old books and make them into journals or smash books. What fun, gesso, metallic paints and vintage paper and prints.

Since I  needed  vintage paper and prints  in my collage and journal work,  I started looking in thrift stores and estate sales for old broken books.  I discovered that I like collecting and selling vintage books , old maps, and art prints.

Oh my gosh, there were all kinds of interesting items being sold at estate sales.  I got the privilege of seeing the memories and artifacts of some interesting people.  Their treasured items reflected their memories from long ago. What an insight into some ordinary people with some extraordinary experiences.  One couple, whose sale I attended, had traveled all over the world. There were small gems among their memorabilia.  Some of those treasured  items I have kept, but some I have listed in my shop.

On a note of reality, I am a psychologist and I still work in my private practice but only part time now.   I am helping my patients live a more fulfilling life because of my own road to discovery.

I hope that by sharing  my creative evolution it  will help you understand  why there are so many different items in my shop.

My wish for you is to discover your creative and juicy life force and revel in it.  My  hope for me is to continue to evolve and explore my world and share some of the more interesting discoveries with you.ImageImageImageImage
